Your Bakery Manager

Having trained under a Dutch baker, Dave Forward has managed Otter Co-op’s Bakery since 1999. Dave owned and operated his own bakery for 13 years, and is well-versed in all aspects of creating and offering a variety of delicious, quality baked products for you, the customer.

Dave is also the recipient of the Scratch Bakery Manager of the Year Award (2006) for Western Canada. Congratulations to Dave and his staff for receiving this award and for a job very well done.

The Staff

Our bakery is about people - those who serve you and those we serve in the community. The Bakery Staff, consisting of nine full time and part time employees, collectively brings more than 70 years of co-op baking experience to work every day. Several of the staff are certified bakers, some are trained baker’s helpers and some are customer service clerks. Good teamwork and tremendous loyalty result in daily consistency of baked goods and excellence in customer service. With your needs in mind, Otter Co-op’s talented bakery staff combine their unique abilities to produce an extensive variety of products for all occasions.

Fresh Products - From Our Ovens to Your Home

At Otter Co-op, we bake approximately 70% of our products in our in-store ovens. The majority is made on site from scratch; just like at home.

Made with our own pastry recipe and made fresh every day, we offer an excellent assortment of pies including our very own apple, pumpkin, strawberry rhubarb, peach, and more.

Cakes and Pastries

Made by professional hands and using our own butter cream, cakes and pastries are available on a daily basis and for all occasions. Specialty cakes can be made to order; just give us a call at 604-607-6920. We also make and carry loaf and after dinner cakes for every day. Try one for dessert today.

Breads and Buns

At Otter Co-op, we bake a variety of bread and buns fresh every morning, offering a selection ranging from whole wheat and grain breads to regular white bread, cinnamon buns and danishes. French breads and garlic breads are also popular and always available. You may pre-order bread and buns if you need a larger quantity, if you are having a party, or if you are just stocking up.

Squares

Our recipes for fresh baked squares are unique to Otter Co-op. Having just introduced these products, our selection includes butter tarts, almond tarts, brownies and date squares. We also have a variety of excellent coffee cakes available every day, for you and your guests at coffee time.

Cookies

We offer you our variety of delicious and fresh cookies, as well as some English Bay gourmet cookies baked daily on the premises.

Our Meat Department has won awards for quality and service; individual service that comes from your ability to speak directly to our experienced staff of meat cutters. Order a special roast of beef or pork to your exact requirements or select your next meal from the extensive display of fresh beef, pork, chicken and turkey available every day at very competitive prices. Fresh Produce from potatoes to artichokes are available every day. Competitively priced produce awaits your selection from local vegetables and fruits to exotic fruits from around the globe. The Otter Co-op Produce Department has everything you need to ensure your family has a well rounded and healthy diet.

Otter Co-op has a great selection of organic food

Living a healthy life means much more today than just diet and exercise. A healthy life can include getting proper rest, having regular checkups, and taking care of your mental health, among others.

One of the healthy options more available to us now than ever before is organic or natural food. Grown with substantially less pesticide and herbicide than traditional foods, natural foods are higher in nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and chromium, and lower in toxins such as aluminum, lead and mercury. Minimally processed natural foods promotethe body’s innate ability to ward off illness and disease.

The world organic market has grown 20 percent per year since the early 1990s and is now expected to increase at a faster rate. As consumer demand has increased, Otter Co-op has responded by offering more natural foods and other products. These include:

Groceries of all kinds are available from basic standards like canned goods in national and co-op brands, to specialty ethnic- based products that give your meals an international flavor. If it is boxed, canned or packed in a special pouch you can be assured that your grocery department can get it for you if it isn't already stocked on our shelves. A wide selection of frozen products from convenience foods to your favorite ice cream can be found in our frozen foods section directly across from our well-stocked dairy cooler. Milk, butter, cheeses from around the world, yogurts, juices, eggs and much more await you.
